Operation Launch and Bail
Operation Launch and Bail 📘🚀✌🏼:
I see it all the time – authors release a book, and then... poof, they stop talking about it.
Whether they're kinda tired of it…
Or disappointed with sales…
Or just ready to move on to something new and exciting… ✨
Their book gets left to fend for itself. 😳
If this sounds familiar…
I think it’s heartbreaking for your poor book. 💔 It spent weeks, months (or years) being your baby and getting tons of time and attention... 👼🏼
Then boom - as soon as it leaves the nest… IGNORED.
Here are 2 ideas to make sure your books don’t feel abandoned 😛:
1️⃣ Plan for 3-4 Weeks of Promotion Post-Release
Most solid launch plans include at least 3-4 weeks of promotion after the release.
Clients and I often use a 6-4 strategy – 6 weeks of promotion before the release and 4 weeks after. Your launch promo plan will vary based on lots of factors, but 6:4 is a good starting point. 😉 📈
2️⃣ Create a Backlist Promotion Plan
Perhaps consider your backlist books like a flock that needs tending throughout time in order to stay alive. 🐑🐑🐑 Try rotating backlist promotions every couple of weeks (or months) so that no book gets neglected.
Your books are out there doing their thing… Let’s help them live their best life. 💙 📚
Here’s a quote that really struck a chord with me from Julia Amante about backlist marketing:
"After the launch period, little attention is paid to that book…
Those books become part of the backlist that they no longer think about.
This always struck me as a bizarre way to do business."
I agree! It’s such a bizarre way to do business. 🤯
Spending tons of time and resources to create a product - then forgetting about it a few weeks later.
But it’s so common, and TBH, I’ve been guilty of this myself. 😬
Well, let’s tackle this together! 💪🏽
Sooo… Do you sometimes ghost your books? If not, what are your strategies?
